Son of a Bitch
A darkly comic monologue about motherhood, shame and one ten-second mistake
About
Son of a Bitch is the Scotsman Fringe First award-winning play by Anna Morris. A bold female solo performance, Son of a Bitch takes audiences through a darkly comic monologue that explores themes of motherhood, mental health, shame, perimenopause, and what happens when a stranger shares your darkest moment on social media.
Caught in a moment of air rage on a delayed flight from Dubai to London, Marnie does the worst thing she possibly could: she calls her four-year-old son Charlie a c*nt… and someone films it. A ten-second mistake unravels into click-bait viral outrage, and Marnie's life, femininity and maternal instincts all come under huge public scrutiny.
Over an hour of bold, funny and brutally honest performance, Son of a Bitch interweaves the build-up to Marnie's explosive moment on the plane with snapshots of her 20s and 30s, feeling increasing pressure from those around her to settle down and have children. The play questions the idea that the childless must regret not having had children, and explores whether some parents regret having had them instead.
TV Development
Son of a Bitch is currently in development as a TV series with Los Angeles based production company Big Beach (Little Miss Sunshine, Sorry Baby, The Farewell, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood).
Publication
The play is published by Methuen (Bloomsbury) and available in UK bookshops and online.
International Adaptations
The show was selected by Mexican based theatre company CulturArte for their 2025 season in Toluca and translated into Spanish. The role of Marnie was played by Betsa Del Valle, and due to popular demand the show was staged twice more in 2026 and is due to have another season later this year.
The show has been licensed by a Portuguese theatre company and will make its debut in Lisbon next year.
Anna is keen for Son of a Bitch to reach as many international audiences as possible, in order to open out difficult conversations about motherhood to other communities — particularly those who expect motherhood to be the default, rather than a choice.
